WHY THIS WASTE?          By Carl McMurray

In Matthew 26, while at the house of Simon in Bethany, Jesus was anointed one evening at supper. His disciples observed the pouring out of this perfume. What a costly extravagance this was. They knew it was worth approximately a year’s wages. They were no doubt amazed but also became indignant and seemed to join in when Judas began grumbling. The question asked was, “Why this waste?” Judas, with his own motives hidden, pointed out that the funds involved could have been used to help the poor. But Jesus responded with an explanation that shows it really was not wasteful at all. It was an act of love that He said would last as long as the gospel itself.

In a similar vein, I wonder if we ask too soon and too often, “Why this waste?” Sometimes, I’m sure we don’t even know we’re asking the question, but we are nonetheless. For example, we work late and long to provide for our families instead of “wasting” time with our children or “wasting” time alone with our mates. We seize on every promotion or overtime opportunity that might get us ahead financially and justify it with trite slogans like, “Gotta make hay while the sun shines.” Do we really think it would be a “waste” to just play with the kids in the evening or spend Saturday in the company of our mate?
