Ready for Change... by Carl McMurray
Genesis 1:14 is the record of the fourth day of creation when God made the lights in the heavens for signs and seasons, days and years. David mentions this in Psalm 104:19, i.e., that God made the moon for the seasons. Although I can find no indication that there actually were changes of season in the pre-flood earth, just like other aspects of difference between then and now, such as complete vegetarianism in all the earths creatures and the absence of rainfall; it appears that the Creator built into our system of existence the need and possibility of such for later times. From the very beginning then, God has acknowledged that the things of His creation would change with time.
As I look out over the lake in front of my study window I see the leaves that turn yellow and red. I note the habit of weather around here to turn off bitter cold right after Thanksgiving when I usually want to put some lights up to decorate. That cold weather is less than 60 days away. I’d better get ready as the season changes.
Over and over, one of the greatest mistakes we can make in life is to ignore the fact that seasons pass and things change. Indeed it has been said that the only thing that doesn’t change is change itself.
Our children grow up and leave home and no matter how much of a pain they were at age three, we will miss their noise and excitement and simple joy. Train them now so that their leaving will be an exciting step into the future for them and you, not a fearful loss and feeling of failure.
Brothers and sisters grow old and pass from this life. Faithful ones will be thought of and modeled after and referred to for decades. Do we appreciate them before they leave us however? Give them the gift of knowing they are appreciated. When ears grow dull, eyes grow dim, and hands unsteady it is easy to believe that one is of no use any longer because we can’t do wheat we used to. Let them know that the passing of seasons does not dull their worth or value.. before their gone.
We ignore the making right of wrongs, and the obedience to truth that we know should be a part of our life. Time passes and for many, too soon it is too late. Why not do what God wants you to do now?! Don’t just think about it. From the beginning this earth, including you and I, were made for change. Don’t be surprised by it.
