Mere Talk       By Carl McMurray

Proverb 14:23 reads, In all toil there is profit, but mere talk tends only to poverty. I like that wisdom. There is so much talking going on in our information saturated culture that I need to be reminded every so often that “talk is cheap.” Talk is just talk. It has no more meaning or character than the one who is speaking. I don’t have to believe everything that is said, just because someone is saying it.

An example might be found in the news release this past week about TV’s GREY’S ANATOMY star, T.R. Knight. He is quoted as saying, in FOX news, that the age difference between him and his 19-year old boyfriend is “bound to raise some eyebrows.” If you’re like me and don’t watch this program you may not have known that 35-year old T.R. Knight is a male star and that this is a homosexual relationship that is under discussion.

He goes on to say that they had no plans to wed, adding, “We’ve only been together for six months, so I think it’s a little soon to consider marriage.” Also, “I think it’s very important to honor marriage. I take it very seriously.”

Mere talk. That’s all this is. Mr. Knight, saying it with a straight face no less, would have us to believe that he takes marriage seriously and that he “honors” marriage. If he was to be taken seriously this would be in accord with Hebrews 13:4, which reads, Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous. The problem is that the homosexual is guilty of sexually immorality. His choice of lifestyle is one that dishonors marriage and defiles it.

For a homosexual to state that he honors marriage and takes it seriously, is the same as a thief who honors unbreakable security systems and murderers who honor life. Mr Knight does NOT honor the marriage relationship and going through with a “wedding” in California after it is made legal, June 17, will not make it so either.

When Oprah denies Jesus as the way, she is not becoming more spiritual. When T.R. Knight pursues immorality he not honoring morals. and when any of us pursue our own path, no matter what that path may be, we are NOT walking the right path and the best one. It is only by repentance and seeking Christ’s grace that we honor truth, morality, and the very best system for living and dying that has ever been. Everything else is just talk. Knight has his tale, I’ll sit on mine.
